Have You Caught the Farmville Plague?

If you’re a Facebook user, you’ve probably received Farmville invites from your friends. Am I right? Of course I’m right. You can’t be on Facebook and NOT receive a Farmville invite at least once. It’s rampant. People are obsessed.

I don’t play Farmville and never have, so my post today may not be terribly educated in terms of how the game works internally. From what I’ve seen and heard of it though, it’s a game that sucks people in by huge masses, and requires them to invite their friends so they can build a virtual farm and earn things like pets and plants.

So, after receiving more invites than I could count, I blocked Farmville invites. That’s right…blocked. If you’re wondering why I haven’t joined your little farmland, it’s because my account is now rejecting anything Farmville-related. Oh the joy I felt when I saw that link for “Block this Application”! I clicked it and celebrated, and I’ve been Farmville-free ever since.

Wondering how you can block a game invite? There are two ways: either go to the page where all of your requests (friend requests, event invites, etc.) are featured and look for the “Block invites” link under the invitation, or go directly to the game page and below the profile photo click “Block this application”.  This tip stands true for any annoying game invites you may be receiving.

If you aren’t receiving invites but the Farmville news is showing up in your feed, you can get rid of that too. Just roll your mouse over to the right side of the status update until a little “X” shows up. Click it, and it will give you the option to hide the application.

And as an extra bonus, I decided to see how many people were searching how to block Farmville on Google every month. Take a gander at this, Farmville users.

For some reason, those results are not surprising in the least. In closing, I stumbled across a fan page on Facebook entitled, I Hate Farmville. I joined. :)

ahhhhhhhhh thanks Mandee… I think I will be popping down to facebook to do a bit of blocking.

Thanks for sharing. Farmville is not my cup of tea. I did notice that you joined the fan page “I hate farmville” on facebook.

Sure thing, Aidan! I rarely receive gaming invites on Facebook anymore…makes using FB for business so much easier when I’m not dealing with the silliness! :)

    Hi Mandee,

Thanks for the help on the Farmville game…I have not gotten involved and not befriended anyone involved. Heard a news report yesterday on how these games opens the door to theft identity.

I am too serious about why I am on Facebook to begin with, I want value.

Same here, Rebecca! I’d be very uncomfortable playing games on FB that require access and permissions to my page…many times apps like Farmville send out mass invites or wall postings that go to every friend, and I would hate to risk anything like that happening since I use FB for business.

    Mandee,
We couldn’t agree with you more. There are so many more productive things that must be done than messing around with Farmville and other such nonsense games. Our time is so much more valuable than that as we see you believe about your time as well.
Thanks for sharing this way to block it entirely. We had done it already and should have shared it then but luckily you have done it now!
Have a great, productive and Farmville free day!

The glorious part about this all is I cant even remember the last time I got an invite to an app like that.

Blocking applications, creating lists, and blocking people who invite to 50 million things is one of the biggest time savers we can do on FB.

Thanks for sharing. Have a great day!

That’s awesome, Joe! One of the biggest complaints I hear from people about Facebook is the game invites (that, and privacy settings). I hope I can help others who haven’t figured this out yet become more aware of the BLOCK button! :)

Mandee – I’m finally making a comment after so much time.

Farmville, Mafia Wars, YoVille, Restaurant City, and similar ilk have not visited my ‘invites’ page for some time now.

What’s cool is that for some reason, I’ve been meeting less people who are hell-bent on getting thousands of people in their games….

    Law of Attraction perhaps?

    Paul,

SO glad you stopped by to comment!

You know, I don’t think I have a lot of friends that play these games anymore either. From what I can see, the majority of people who do are my personal friends or relatives of mine who aren’t in business…but my business contacts don’t really play that I’m aware of.

    Have a great weekend!
