I’ve never had a problem with being in front of people doing or saying anything, although I do remember participating in a show back in college where I forgot the chorus of an Elton John song I was playing, and I just faked it.
I think it all comes down to preparation. I rehearse in front of mirrors, as you mentioned, but I also feel like I know my subjects well, to the point where if I’m asked almost any question I’ll have some kind of answer, even if every once in awhile I preface that response with “I’m not sure”. No one ever said we had to be perfect to be in front of folks, right?
I think it’s all in the preparation as well. I’ve had a few times where I showed up to speak claiming I was just going to “wing” it, and they didn’t go so well. A lot of my confidence lies in how well I’ve prepared…I also run through a list of possible questions and try to prepare myself for the answer. Sometimes someone will ask something that throws me, but in that case I just try to come up with an honest answer that sounds good.
